COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Three water line breaks at the Columbus Police Headquarters have damaged the building.

The first happened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 9th floor. It was quickly contained.

A water line that feeds the sprinkler system on the 8th floor burst around midnight Wednesday. It caused damage to Chief Kim Jacobs' office and other rooms on the same floor.

A short time later another pipe inside an interior wall burst. It went undetected for several hours. That's what caused the bulk of the damage to rooms on the 7th and 6th floors.

Fire crews were initially called when popping sounds were heard as the water came into contact with electrical wires. No fire was ever found.

While the Marconi Blvd building is open to the public, police are asking people to only come in if absolutely necessary.
