DUI checkpoints announced for Friday night, Saturday morning

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) --Columbus police will be targeting two intersections for sobriety checkpoints Friday night and early Saturday because of their higher-than-normal rate of impaired-driver crashes.

One will be held from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. at E. Hudson Street at Azelda Avenue in northeast Columbus.  The second will be at N. High Street at E. Tompkins Street in north Columbus from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday.

During a five-year period between 2009 and 2013, 4.2 percent of the non-freeway crashes reported to Columbus Police involved an impaired driver.

“The locations for each sobriety checkpoint demonstrate a clear statistical need to raise public awareness of the impaired-driver problem,” said Columbus Police Traffic Bureau Sergeant Michael Smith.

The Franklin County DUI Task Force is adding another sobriety checkpoint Friday night. It's from 9PM to 1AM on Refugee Rd., west of Noe-Bixby Rd.
