Former doctor gets 36 years in prison for overdose death

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A former doctor will serve 36 years in prison for causing the death of a woman by giving her a lethal dose of heroin.

Dr. Ali Salim pled guilty to causing the death of Deanna Ballman and her unborn child. Ballman's body was found last August in her car in Delaware County.

Salim was given 11 years each for Ballman's death, the death of the unborn child, and rape. He was also sentenced on a charge of tampering with evidence.

Ballman's mother spoke in court before the sentence was handed down Friday, saying, "Forgiveness? Don't even ask for it. We haven't seen any remorse for it in these proceedings. You can't even look me in the eye."

Salim later did just that. "I know that words mean nothing. I want them to know that I am sorry. I wish there was something that I could do."

Salim and Ballman had met through an ad on Craigslist. Salim admitted to turning to drugs and sex for satisfaction.
