A Russian journalist is donating his Nobel Peace Prize medal to raise funds to help Ukrainian refugees. The co-winner of last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, journalist and editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” Dmitry Muratov announced this week that he would be donating his Nobel medal to be auctioned off to raise money for Ukrainian refugee relief.

"I have decided to donate the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Medal to the Ukrainian Refugee Fund," Muratov wrote in an article published in Novaya Gazeta on Tuesday. "There are already over 10 million refugees. I ask the auction houses to respond and put up for auction this world-famous award."

In the announcement he says five things need to be done right away:

  1. Stop combat fire.
  2. Exchange prisoners.
  3. Release the bodies of the dead.
  4. Provide humanitarian corridors and assistance.
  5. Support refugees.

He also calls on individuals to be generous with “refugees, the wounded and children who need urgent treatment.”
