A daughter in Missouri surprises her dad by secretly becoming his kidney donor. More than a year ago, John Ivanowski from St. Louis, was told he had a condition that caused an overactive immune system and was destroying his kidneys. Soon, he would need regular dialysis and would be hooked up to a machine for hours every day. His daughter, Delayne Ivanowski saw her dad suffering and wanted to do something to help him.
She wanted to be her dad’s kidney donor, but he wouldn’t allow it. “I’m like, ‘You’re too young, you’ve got a long time to be here and my time’s limited,’” says John. But without his knowledge, Delayne reached out to her dad’s health coordinator and as soon as he was well enough, she began getting tested to see if she was a match. For eight months, Delayne kept it all a secret until the day of their transplant surgery.
As they were in the hospital recuperating from the operation, she walked into her dad’s room with her hospital gown on and he began to cry. “Oh my god. Are you kidding me?” he says, overwhelmed with emotion. “I knew you were up to something.” he adds, and she replies, “I’m always up to something.” Delayne posted a video of the touching moment on social media and it’s been viewed over 4-million times and garnered more than half a million likes. Although he didn’t want his daughter to donate to him, after it was done, John says he’s grateful, saying, “Not to be hooked up to the machine anymore and be able to do what I need to do or what I want to do, it’s just a big relief.”
