Last week, a call came into Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office in Bath, Maine, that a dog was lying in the middle of the road. Deputy Mark Anderson responded to the call, but couldn’t find a dog, so he started searching the area.
In a nearby ditch, he found “a very cold, female dog, appearing almost frozen to death.” It appeared to the deputy that the pup had tried to claw her way out of the ditch before giving up. She was whimpering and holding her paw up when Anderson approached her, picked her up and put her in his cruiser to warm up. Back at the dispatch center, they bundled the pup up in a warm blanket and put her in front of a heater.
Anderson returned to the area where he found the dog and began going door to door, eventually figuring out who her owner was. The pup’s owner says the 14-year-old dog had been let out the previous evening and never returned. The dog was then reunited with her grateful owner. The Sagadahoc Sheriff’s office later took to social media to praise their employees for going above and beyond, writing that their efforts, “without a doubt, saved the life of this precious pet.”
