On Saturday, Long Island, New York, 911 dispatchers received a call about a mother duck on the highway in Massapequa. Apparently, her four ducklings had fallen into a storm drain causing her to become agitated. Officers from the Nassau County Police Department responded to the call and could hear the faint distress calls from the ducklings, eight feet underground.
With help from a pair of officers from the Emergency Service Unit, they tracked the sewer system's path to a neighboring reservoir where they could hear the ducklings' cries for help. The officers then used their cellphones to play mother duck calls from YouTube, hoping to coax the ducklings out of the sewer.
Each of the four ducklings eventually responded to the familiar momma duck sound and made their way to safety. Officers gave the ducklings a quick clean-up before returning them to their mother at a nearby creek. Nassau County Police later posted about the rescue on social media, where commenters praised the officers for going above and beyond the call of duty and showing compassion for even the tiniest members of the community.
