A three-year-old boy in Lewiston, Maine, is lucky to be alive today after falling from a fourth-floor window in his family’s apartment.
On Friday evening, a teen who lives in the new Gauvreau Place apartments in Maine’s second-largest city, saw something fall past her window and ran downstairs to find a small child had fallen out of a window, more than 30 feet to the concrete sidewalk. "She proceeded to grab him and take him right inside to get medical attention, called the ambulance", says Cassandra Gagnon, a neighbor and friend of the teen's mother.
Surprisingly, the toddler only suffered minor cuts and bruises from the fall. "That's absolutely amazing that he could fall from that height and be fine," says neighbor Dean Davis. "He's only got a little cut on his tongue and a cut on his head, and that's it,” explains Gagnon. The child’s family thought he was in his bed until police knocked on their door following the incident.
Everyone is grateful that the child made it through the ordeal relatively unscathed and officials are taking the opportunity to educate the public about the dangers of leaving windows open when children can possibly fall out of them. Firefighters recommend installing window guards to prevent falls and advising residents to keep their windows locked when not in use. And if you have little ones at home, they recommend moving furniture away from the windows to help prevent a tragedy.
