First Responder On Honeymoon Cruise Saves Life Of Another Passenger

After getting married on June 17th, Jair Hawkins and his new bride Hailey were on their honeymoon cruise when the off-duty engineer with the Portland Tennessee Fire Department helped to save a life. Jair had just gone to another deck to get some food when Hailey called and told him to “get back now!”

When he arrived, he discovered a passenger performing CPR on an unconscious woman. Without hesitating, Jair sprang into action, applying the ship’s automated external defibrillator (AED), which indicated the woman needed a shock. The first shock failed to revive the woman, so they continued CPR with help from a third passenger. Then the AED machine recommended a second shock, which was successful.

The woman regained her pulse and was even responsive by the time the ship's medical team arrived to take over her care. Over the weekend, the Portland Fire Department took to Facebook, writing that first responders are “never truly off-duty,” and praising Jair for his “great work.”
