A 12-year-old boy from Jerusalem, Israel, is on the mend following a remarkable surgery to reattach his head after an accident internally decapitated him. Suleiman Hassan was on a bike ride near his home in the Jordan Valley when he was run over by a car, leaving him with a fracture in his head and neck joint, as well as severe ligament tears.
Suleiman was rushed by helicopter to Hadassah Medical Center Ein Kerem, where he underwent a long, complex operation led by Drs. Ohad Einav and Ziv Asa. "Due to the serious injury, the head almost completely disconnected from the base of the neck," Dr. Einav explains, humorously adding, "Don't try this at home, folks."
With only a 50% chance of survival, Einav says it’s “no small thing” that Suleiman was able to make a full recovery with “no neurological deficits or sensory or motor dysfunction.” But the boy’s father is crediting “professionalism, technology and quick decision-making” for the outcome. “Bless you all,” the father says to the medical team, “Thanks to you he regained his life even when the odds were low and the danger was obvious.”
