In September of 2022, Nicole Skaats learned her 10-day-old daughter, Mia, had a heart condition and would need a heart transplant.
In May, Mia received a new heart in a groundbreaking "domino transplant procedure," where a portion of Mia’s original heart went to another infant, Brooklyn Civil.
The successful nine-hour surgery left both families feeling grateful and recognizing their daughters would have a lifelong connection.
