On October 6th, Jennifer Seaman, 40, and her mother, Sue Schaffnit, 66, embarked on a 54-hour round trip to rescue Jennifer's 93-year-old grandmother before Hurricane Milton hit Florida. They left their home in Peoria, Illinois, and drove over 1,200 miles to Venice, Florida. After 20 hours on the road, they arrived at the care home, where staff had a plan to shelter in place, but Jennifer and Sue decided to bring their grandmother back to Illinois with them for her safety.
The journey home to Illinois was challenging, to say the least. They encountered gridlock traffic on I-75 and only moved about 100 miles in six hours. Then they had trouble finding a hotel to rest at during the drive, but eventually found lodging outside of Atlanta for a brief break before continuing their trip. They finally arrived home in Peoria at 5 a.m. on October 9th, after 34 hours on the road.
Jennifer expressed relief that her grandmother was safe and pride in her resilience during the long trip. Despite the arduous journey, her grandmother has remained strong. They’re not sure how long she’ll stay in Illinois, and while she’s eager to return to Florida to check on her friends and her assisted living home, it’s been impacted by flooding and power outages due to the storm.
