High School Football Coach Saves Rival Team’s Coach By Donating Kidney

Mason Williams was only born with one kidney, and while we only need one to function, if it’s not working properly, that’s a serious problem. When his kidney started to fail, the football coach at Cleburne High School in Texas started dialysis. While sharing his health update with Mike Trevino, a football coach at rival Highland Park High School who had previously coached with him at Fort Worth Polytechnic, his friend and fellow coach wanted to help.

Trevino secretly got tested to see if he could donate his kidney to Williams and found out he was a match. He surprised his pal with the good news and last December, Williams got the best Christmas present ever - a life-saving kidney transplant from Trevino. The surgery was a success and made the bond between these coaches even stronger, turning them from friends to family.

The men had a heartwarming reunion on the field last Friday when Cleburne played Highland Park and Williams and Trevino were celebrated as honorary captains. Fans cheered and celebrated their achievements as coaches, as well as their selfless acts. But for Trevino, the choice to donate his kidney was simple. “I don’t know that I’ve ever been more confident about a decision, other than maybe marrying my wife,” he says. And Williams couldn’t be more grateful for the second chance it’s giving him.
