A couple sailing around the Hawaiian Island of Oahu last week rescued five scuba divers who’d been separated from their dive boat. Camila Storchi and her husband, who were sailing from Kaneohe to Honolulu, heard screams for help and spotted “five little dots” in the ocean. The divers had been clinging to each other, trying to stay afloat and visible.
When the couple reached the divers, one of them was showing signs of hypothermia and vomiting. Unable to safely bring the group aboard, the couple quickly contacted the Coast Guard and circled around the divers for 45 minutes while keeping their spirits up and offering water. Storchi later shared a video on social media of the dramatic scene, showing the divers floating in the waves.
A Coast Guard helicopter and the divers' original dive boat arrived at the scene around the same time, allowing the dive boat to retrieve the group. The Coast Guard reported that the dive boat had “lost” the divers but had learned of their rescue from radio communication. Aaron’s Dive Shop, the company managing the diving excursion, said it was reviewing its procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
