Butcher Shop Hands Out 550 Free Thanksgiving Turkeys

On Saturday morning, Carniceria Gonzalez, a local butcher shop in Bakersfield, California, hosted its 5th annual Community Turkey Giveaway, giving away 550 free turkeys to community members in need ahead of Thanksgiving. The shop owner Mr. Wagyu says he feels it’s important to give back during difficult times. The event was sponsored in part by the local charitable organization Raices of Kern, whose president, Ramon Sanchez, was pleased with the turnout.

Mr. Wagyu shared his gratitude for the opportunity to be able to help others in need, saying, “Coming into this country as an illegal and being able to do this, this is the American dream to me.” He was especially moved by the community’s participation, especially given the bad weather conditions, which just proved the community’s need for support.

More than just providing turkeys at the holidays, Mr. Wagyu says he hopes his efforts will inspire leadership and unity in the community. He called on others — politicians, business owners, and individuals — to “be the change” and focus on building a sense of community and support, urging people to work together to lift people up.
