Strangers Raise Half-Million Dollars In 24 Hours After Mosque Arson

The Islamic Center of Victoria, Texas burned down over the weekend, but it didn’t take long for people to show their support for the mosque. A GoFundMe campaign was created to help with rebuilding costs, and within 24 hours, they had raised $500,000 of their $850,000 goal!

Not only did the fundraising campaign receive financial support, some commenters said they would be happy to offer their construction and carpentry skills as well. And now, after raising money for only three days, donations have exceeded the goal and the mosque has raised over $910,000 so far.

“Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the tremendous support we’ve received. The outpouring of love, kind words, hugs, helping hands and the financial contributions are examples of the true American Spirit,” writes Shahid Hashmi, president of the Islamic Center. “We’re so very much thankful and appreciative of everyone’s thoughtfulness.
