Ellie Bosher was really excited about her “Alice in Wonderland” themed birthday, but when she realized her grandmother wouldn’t be there, she changed her plans so they could celebrate together. Her Granny, Rita Blankenship, was recovering from a spinal surgery at a nursing home nearby, so Ellie’s mom Kimber decided to take the party there.
The festivities were originally planned for a hotel in their hometown of Pulaski, Tennessee, but as it got closer to the big event, Ellie got more and more upset. One day, she told her mom, “If Granny can’t come to my party, I just don’t want to have it.”
But when Kimber asked the nursing home if her daughter’s 10th birthday party could be held there, they agreed. And the family was even able to surprise Granny with the party. "I loved it. It was so much fun,” the fourth-grader says. “My favorite part was pretty much seeing the look on Granny’s face.”
