Inmates Build Dog Houses For Humane Society

Some inmates at the jail in Burnsville, North Carolina are getting the chance to enjoy some fresh air and do a little good in the community. They’re hard at work building dog houses for the Yancey County Humane Society and they’re happy to have the job.

The Humane Society provides the materials and through a community partnership, the Sheriff’s department provides the labor from the inmates. It gives them a chance to get out of the jail for a little while and focus on something else, and even though they’re working, it feels like a break.

Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard says the inmates take pride in their work on the project. "It's good for them to get out of the jail setting for a while, to give back," he says.
