Here’s How Much Pee Really Is In That Swimming Pool

You know that it’s something that’s always in the back of your mind. Every single time you dive face-first into someone’s pool, you can’t help but think about it. Especially since you’ve contributed to the problem at a public pool…and don’t even think about lying (we all know you did it). What we’re talking about how much pee is actually in that pool.

Don’t be embarrassed. Even Olympic swimmers admit to letting loose beneath the water, and now researchers have put an actual number on how much urine…you’re in. To find out this info, they turned to an artificial sweetener compound that’s typically found in products like Sunett or Sweet One…it’s called ACE.

ACE goes right through the digestive system, and makes it into the pee-party unscathed. This is what they were looking for when they took 250 samples from 31 pools and hot tubs. In addition, they tested 90 tap water samples. You’ll be happy to know that the compound was found 570-times more in the pools and hot tubs, than the tap water – so you’re not drinking it…as much.

The final tally? In a pool that’s one-third of an Olympic-sized pool…or 220,000 gallons…you’ll typically find 20 gallons of pee. Hopefully, that’s diluted enough for you.
