When people heard that the Trump Administration’s budget proposal includes plans to stop funding the Meals on Wheels program, they were angry and upset. But they put their outrage to work and have been donating time and money to the already underfunded senior citizen meal delivery service.
Since the announcement, the Meals on Wheels America program has received 50 times more than the typical donations, according to Jenny Bertolette, vice president of communications. Not only that, but their AmericaLetsDoLunch website shows “an almost 500% jump in volunteer sign-ups.”
“The network is already serving 23 million fewer meals now than in 2005, and waiting lists are mounting in every state,” explains Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America.
