FEEL GOOD: Waiter Helps Feed Customer With Huntington’s Disease

Joe Thomas has been a server at IHOP in Springfield, Illinois for 11 years, and he always shows up for his shift with a smile. The 43-year-old server knows his regular customers by name and treats them like family. “I love the people,” he says. “I just love my life, and I love the way I am.”

On a recent visit to the restaurant, another customer caught Thomas going above and beyond to help one of his regulars eat. The woman has Huntington's disease, a fatal genetic disorder, that has left her unable to feed herself. She comes in with her husband, who used to let his food get cold so he could feed his wife, but then Thomas started helping her.

A photo of Thomas’ kind gesture went viral after it was posted, getting ten thousand likes. And the server says he hopes it’ll inspire others to pay it forward. “I really treat people like I want to be treated,” Thomas says. “If I get to be that age and something happened to me I would want someone to help me out.”
