Former Illinois men's basketball coach John Groce landed on his feet as head coach at Akron.
Groce is familiar with the Mid-American Conference after a stint at Ohio ended in a Sweet 16 appearance in 2012 and helped propel him to the Big Ten job with the Fighting Illini.
Keith Dambrot left Akron to become head coach at Duquesne. Groce, 44, has four NCAA Tournament wins in seven appearances with Ohio and Illinois. Dambrot was 0-3 in the NCAA Tournament and the Zips have never won a game in the tournament.
Illinois went 18-14 last season -- Groce was fired before the NIT -- and went 95-75 in Groce's five-year tenure in Champaign, Ill.
The Illini never made the NCAA Tournament after getting there in Groce's first season.
Groce is 180-131 as a head coach.
