Good News: Double Lung Transplant Saves Man With Terminal Cancer

A man with terminal lung cancer undergoes a successful double lung transplant. Doctors at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago announced last week that they’d successfully performed a double lung transplant on a patient with advanced terminal lung cancer. Albert Khoury, a 54-year-old non-smoker from Chicago, underwent the seven-hour surgery last September, and after six months, he’s healthy and showing no signs of cancer.

Khoury’s doctors were concerned about how he might do after the procedure because the drugs that transplant recipients take so they don’t reject their new organs can also prevent the body from fighting any cancer that might not have been removed. But Khoury’s oncologist Dr. Young Chae is pleased with the outcome. "Six months after transplant, we're thrilled with Albert's progress. He doesn't require oxygen and is leading a normal life," Chae says.

Some normalcy has returned to Khoury’s life after two years of battling the disease. He’s now able to work and go to the gym without a breathing machine in tow. "My life went from zero to 100," he says. "You didn't see this smile on my face for over a year, but now I can't stop smiling."
