#GoodNews: Donations Pour In For FL Family Living In U-Haul

A Florida community comes together to help a family living in a U-Haul since Christmas. When Gary Laskowski had to quit his job to take care of his disabled wife, Mia, they fell behind on their bills and ended up getting evicted. Out of desperation, Gary got a U-Haul truck to put their stuff in and he, his wife, and their 10-year-old son, Julian, slept in the cab of the truck for the last month.

While they were on a waitlist for shelter and assistance, Gary reached out to Stan Arthur, with the nonprofit HelpStPete.org hoping they could help him with some gas money. Stan gave him $30 and then provided a used electric wheelchair for Gary’s wife. But when Stan saw the U-Haul the Laskowskis were living in, he knew he needed to do more.

Through the I Love St. Pete Facebook page, Stan was able to raise $16-thousand to help Gary and his family get back on their feet. “Sorry for what you’ve had to go through,” Stan said to Gary when he delivered the good news. “I hope this is going to make a real difference.” And Gary called Stan’s help “divine intervention” and “a blessing,” and plans to use the money to get off the streets and into a hotel until he can find a permanent place for them to live.
