Syrian Refugee Raises Over $190K, Travels To Syria To Help Quake Victims

A Syrian refugee and business owner living in Tennessee is helping victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. After hearing the news about the devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey, Yassin Terou made a plan to help those affected by the tragedy. The day after the earthquake, the Syrian refugee who now lives in Knoxville and owns a local chain of falafel restaurants started a fundraiser to help survivors and made plans to travel to Turkey to help provide food and other necessities.

Terou’s initial goal was to raise $20,000, but in the first two days, he raised over $60,000. Donations continued to pour in and now he’s raised more than $190-thousand, which will go directly to two nonprofits: CelebrateMercy and Syria Relief and Development. A few days later, Terou jumped on a plane headed for Turkey to put his plan into action.

As he travels to affected areas in Turkey, Terou has been giving updates via social media. While he working to provide assistance to victims and survivors, he’s continuing to ask for support as the need for help in the area is so great. "There is a lot of need right here,“ he says. “We're just doing everything we can and changing our plan one or two times a day because every time we do something they need more."

Anyone wanting to help Terou’s mission can donate here.
