College Softball Players Put Winning Aside To Help Injured Opponent

During a softball game this past Saturday in Lakeland, Florida, between Southeastern University and Grand View University, two Southeastern players help an injured player from the other team even though it lost them the game. Southeastern was ahead 4-1 and the bases were loaded when Grand View catcher Kaitlyn Moses hit one out of the park. But as the batter rounded first, she injured her leg and fell to the ground in pain.

Even though it would put them down by one run, Southeastern players Leah Gonzalez and Chapel Cunningham picked up their opponent and carried her the rest of the way around the bases, being careful to touch her foot to each base on the way. The rules state that a team can’t help their batter around the bases, but nothing prevents the other team from helping.

After the win, Grand View's coach, Lou Yacinich, put out a statement praising Gonzalez and Cunningham for their sportsmanship. And SEU coach, Kayla Watkins, says she wasn't surprised by the players’ actions and that she's just glad others got to see the leadership she sees in them every day.
