When Trent Johnson, principal of Cypresswood Elementary School in Humble, Texas, heard that one of his fifth-grade students was being bullied, he decided to take action to help him. The child was being teased by his classmates because of his worn-out shoes, so Johnson took the student to the mall and bought him a new pair of sneakers.
This is just one of several examples of actions that Johnson is taking to try and fight bullying at Cypresswood. He also hosts student gatherings in the mornings and afternoons each day and meets with several students each Friday for lunch.
“One thing we must be mindful of is how we respond to bullying,” Johnson explains. “We sit down with the teachers, students, and community to build a plan to serve those kids best and keep them safe.” The principal is showing the importance of standing up against bullying by using communication, kindness, and compassion.
