Last Friday, Labrador retriever Tess approached city workers outside her Portland, Oregon, home hoping to get a treat, but instead, the 14-year-old pup fell 23 feet down an open manhole. The dog’s owner, Larry Beutler, was shocked to see Tess vanish down the hole and quickly called his wife, Linda, with the news. “She just walked up expecting a treat and just went over the edge and disappeared,” Larry recalls.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the emergency and lowered a firefighter down into the hole to rescue the pup. Tess was put in a harness and using a pulley system on a tripod over the hole she was slowly raised to the surface. In all, Tess was underground for nearly an hour. Fortunately, the old gal was unharmed by the incident thanks to a pile of debris at the bottom of the hole that cushioned her fall.

The Beutlers hailed the firefighters “heroes” for saving their pup and had some sage advice for other dogs looking for treats from strangers. “Don’t be like Tess,” Linda jokes. “Don’t just walk up to people and expect to get treats because you might fall in a hole.”
