An Ohio family is making sure a local contractor’s good deed doesn’t go unrecognized. Jamie Wiricks’ dad just had his second knee replacement surgery and is currently having to use a wheelchair during the lengthy recovery. The Wiricks only had a couple of days to have a wheelchair ramp added to their Napoleon, Ohio, home, so they started calling every contractor in town. "I called about 50 contractors and three of them got back to me," Jamie says.

One of those contractors was Jerry Tonjes of JT's Building and Construction and his was the only company able to get the job done soon. He came out and took measurements one day and returned a couple of days later and built the ramp in an afternoon. And when the Wiricks tried to pay him for the job, he refused their money. "There was no cost," Tonjes says. "It was just a good gesture that I just felt I had to do for her."

The kind gesture was a shock to the Wiricks, who had been told by other contractors that the job would take weeks and cost thousands of dollars. "I felt like my thank yous were not enough for him,” Jamie says. “He really, really helped our family in such dire need, in such a short time frame." Tonjes says he knows what the Wiricks are going through, after his girlfriend’s recent battle with cancer. He just wanted to do something nice for someone and doesn’t want any attention for his kind act. But Jamie felt it was too much to let it go without recognition. Now Tonjes hopes others who hear the story are inspired to perform their own acts of kindness.
