WATCH: TikTok Teacher’s “Gen Z Term Dictionary” Goes Viral

A high school teacher in California is going viral for his “Gen Z term dictionary.” The teacher, who doesn’t give his real name and uses the alias Larry Lexicon, made the dictionary for his class, then shared it to TikTok, where it’s gotten millions of views in a matter of days.

“All year long I’ve been listening to you and making a list, which I’ve compiled here for you,” he tells his students at the beginning of a series of recent TikToks. “You guys can let me know if they’re accurate or if I need to revise them, or maybe you can help me to use them in a sentence.”

These are some of the terms and phrases Larry Lexicon includes in his Gen Z dictionary:

  • "Baddie" — "A pretty girl, typically very curvy and independent."
  • “Bruh” — This one’s fairly obvious, it’s “an alternative for ‘bro’” and can be used as an exclamation.
  • "Gyatt" — An exclamation which is a "substitute for 'gosh darn'; typically used in response to seeing a baddie."
  • "Getting sturdy" — A dance usually used "when winning."
  • "Bet" — Another way of saying "OK" or "alright."
  • “Rizz” — “To have charisma.”
  • "Slaps" — Something that's good, "typically in regards to music."
  • “Bussin” — Also something good, but “specifically when talking about food.”
  • "Cap" — A lie.
  • "No cap" — The truth. "And if it's really, really no cap, it's 'on God,'" Lexicon said.

In a follow-up video, Larry Lexicon adds some revisions to definitions and shares that many commenters have pointed out that a lot of the terms have roots in African-American Vernacular English. He re-titles the guide as "The AAVE-inspired Gen Z term dictionary."
