Paralyzed Man Walks Again Thanks To Brain Implants

A Dutch man has taken his first steps since he was paralyzed in a bicycling accident 12 years ago.

Electronic implants placed in his brain wirelessly transmit his thoughts to his legs and feet through a second implant in his spine, letting him move them.

While the implants aren’t ready for commercial release yet, the team of Swiss researchers that created them said they thought it was important to test them in a real-world situation.

When asked about how it felt using the implants, Gert-Jan Oskam told the BBC that “Now I can stand up and have a beer with my friend. It’s a pleasure that many people don’t realize.”
