When Michael Schlemmer from Corbin, Kentucky, ran out of gas on May 18th, he was able to turn an unlucky situation into a windfall. During his refuel stop, he decided to try his luck with a $20 Kentucky Lottery scratch-off game ticket. To his astonishment, he scratched the ticket revealing that he’d won the game's $1-million prize.
Upon realizing he'd hit the jackpot, Schlemmer returned to the Convenient Food Mart to share the exciting news. "I showed the girls that sold it to me, and they about had a fit," he says. The store owners, who'll receive an $8,620 bonus for selling the winning ticket, were equally thrilled.
Schlemmer opted to take his winnings as a lump sum, walking away with over $600-thousand after taxes. Already in the market for a new car, the lucky winner plans to splurge on a new set of wheels and is going to save the rest of his new fortune.
