A Colombian man, Sebastián Arias, scaled a three-story building that was on fire to rescue 25 trapped puppies in Lima, Peru. The drama unfolded on June 9th, as a fire erupted in a recycling warehouse in a residential neighborhood.
In a video posted online, Arias can be seen climbing the burning structure and breaking a window to reach the rooftop where the helpless puppies were trapped. He then began tossing the puppies to bystanders below, who stood ready with mattresses and sheets. The hero says that having worked in the building before gave him insight into how to reach the stranded puppies.
When interviewed after the incident, Arias told reporters that he couldn’t stand the thought of the puppies suffering in the fire. "I saw the dog that was up in the corner,” Arias recalls. “Hearing his cries, his moans, I wouldn't want my dog to die like that." Looking back on the daring rescue, he isn’t even sure how he mustered the energy to scale the building so quickly, but he thinks he may have just had a surge of adrenaline in the moment.
