While the Tampa Bay Rays battled the Texas Rangers at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg on Friday night, another battle was happening in the stands. Janie Morales was taking in the game with her boyfriend Ken Frey when he noticed a commotion happening near their seats behind the Rays’ dugout. Frey could see it was a medical emergency involving another fan and turned to Morales, a stay-at-home mom who used to work as an ultrasound technician, and told her she should go see if she could help.
She quickly made her way a few rows down toward the disturbance and saw a man who was blue in the face and being held by another fan. Morales took over, checking the man’s vitals and having bystanders help get the man on the ground. She then started CPR, performing three sets of 30 thrusts before paramedics arrived with an automatic external defibrillator. After shocking the man two times, he was moved to a waiting stretcher and carted out through an exit behind home plate to a waiting ambulance.
Once the man was in the ambulance on the way to Bayfront Health, paramedics report that he regained consciousness and by Saturday morning, he was in stable condition and expected to be discharged in the coming days. After an eight-minute delay, the game resumed and soon after someone came to Morales to let her know that the man had made it and was going to be okay. At that point, Morales and Frey left their seats to go find some margaritas, grateful that they’d been there and were able to help.
