Last Wednesday, Dana Pogar was driving home after visiting her mother-in-law when she spotted a garage on fire near Appleton Elementary in Grand Junction, Colorado. “I saw some black smoke,” Pogar recalls, “I had just pulled in to see if anyone was yelling for help, or if there were animals barking.”
Pogar soon learned there was a German shepherd in a cage surrounded by wooden pallets right next to the burning structure. So she, along with another bystander, rushed toward the flames to free the dog. Using an orange cargo strap, she led the frightened dog safely away from the fire. Pogar recalls the intense heat and explosions, possibly from a service line or a propane tank.
The owner of the building, which was used to store party supplies for a small business, arrived to find the building and its contents a complete loss, but she broke down in tears when she was reunited with her beloved pet. Pogar called it heartbreaking to see the owner’s business completely destroyed, however, she found it rewarding to be able to help save their fur baby. “It was extremely scary,” she says, “But the mission was saving the dog.”
