Trish Bauer couldn’t sleep after her baby girl was born without a heartbeat and died, and while scrolling through Instagram while lying awake, she saw an Instagram reel that said, “Tomorrow I die on this cold cement ground all alone,” followed by a picture of a dog named Wilbur. “The moment my lost eyes saw his in the video, I knew he couldn’t die like this. His eyes looked like mine. Defeated with life.” Trish had fostered kittens but was scared of dogs…she offered to foster the dog anyway, and just barely made it there before Wilbur was euthanized the next morning.

She and her family took Wilbur, who they renamed Cooper, to the vet and found that he had a cancerous tumor that had to be removed. He was too skinny and weak for the surgery, but the Bauers were ready to help. “Our daughter Lilly is a cancer survivor, too,” Trish said. Just a few weeks later, Cooper was healthy enough for surgery, and not long after the operation, they were told that he was now cancer free. Cooper’s now a permanent part of their family, because, as Trish said about him running to his new family after his surgery, “Home. He had a home in his eyes.”
