10-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized After Drinking Too Much Water

Stay hydrated…but not too much. A young boy in South Carolina was hospitalized recently after drinking too much water. Ray Jordan, 10, guzzled six bottles of water in an hour the night of July 4th weekend and suddenly became unable to control his arms and legs, according to his parents. Jeff and Stacy Jordan say Ray started to appear so “drunk,” that they rushed him to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital at 10:30 that night.

So what caused this health scare? According to the hospital, Ray their son was treated for water intoxication, which is when sodium levels in the blood get dangerously low resulting in the kidneys getting overwhelmed by the amount of water coming into the body. This sudden drop in minerals caused docs to spend eight hours giving Ray sodium and potassium to regulate his blood. Thankfully the boy is back to being his healthy self and has no lingering symptoms, according to his parents.
