Houston fifth-grader Yuvi Agarwal has been interested in music since he was a toddler. "Maybe when I was around two or three, I started liking music,” the 10-year-old says, “I started playing piano when I was four and I think drums when I was five." Yuvi also loves animals and participated in a program through his school where he read to dogs at a privately run shelter in West Houston to help calm them.
At home, Yuvi noticed that his piano playing had a similar effect on his dog Bozo and it gave him an idea. “I decided to basically play music for the animals,” Yuvi said. “That will reduce their anxiety." He told his mom about his idea and she encouraged him to write a plan to pitch to local shelters. So Yuvi created “Wild Tunes,” and after getting a few “no’s,” the no-kill rescue Houston Pets Alive agreed to let the boy try out his concept.
Now, every week, Yuvi plays piano for the dogs at Houston Pets Alive, turning the shelter into something of a canine concert hall, with some furry attendees "singing along" by barking. Yuvi's not content to stop there though: he wants to take Wild Tunes nationwide. He’s also planning a holiday concert, where he’ll be the lead pianist, to help raise money to help further support Houston Pets Alive.
