As temperatures rise worldwide, some cultures are taking skin protection incredibly seriously.
With temps soaring to the high 90’s in Beijing, people are turning to “facekinis” as the hottest new fashion trend. Both locals and tourists have taken to arming themselves with face coverings akin to thin, UV-resistant ski masks, paired with long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and jackets.
Since many women in East Asia favor prefer the fair-skin, sunspot-free look, teens and adults are snapping up the masks that cover them so quickly, China’s capital can no longer keep them in stock. Why is fair skin preferable over a golden tan? In many parts of Asia, fair skin is considered a sign of wealth and class since, historically, only the wealthy could afford to stay out of the sun during the day.
