The City of Akron and the Akron Police Department have fired Ryan Westlake.

Westlake was the officer who shot a 15-year-old teenager in the hand on April 1st after being dispatched to a scene where residents had reported someone was aiming a gun at homes.

It turned out the teen had been holding a fake gun. Charges later filed against the teen were dismissed on Monday.

In a letter informing Westlake of his dismissal, Akron police cited two previous incidents involving the officer and said that his actions have brought the city into disrepute or ridicule, and demonstrated that he is unable to safely and effectively serve as a police officer.
