A waste management worker in Abbotsford, British Columbia, rescued five newborn kittens that had been buried in cardboard at a recycling facility and were moments away from being crushed in a trash compactor.

The worker discovered three kittens last month and found two more at the same site a couple of days later, taking them home overnight before bringing them to the SPCA when the shelter reopened.

The kittens were treated for upper respiratory infections, required bottle feeding, and have since recovered in foster care.

Officials say the kittens are now healthy, socialized, and expected to be available for adoption in about six weeks.
