Officer Helps 94-Year-Old Vet He Doesn’t Know With Cross-Country Move

Sergeant Jeff Turney of the Glendale, Arizona police department recently responded to a unique call and went above and beyond to help resolve it.Howard Benson is a 94-year-old man who was moving to an assisted living facility in Fort Myers, Florida and thought he could drive his vehicle and a trailer full of his stuff across the country on his own.

Benson’s kids, who all live out of town, called the police, hoping they could talk him out of it, and that their dad would fly out and have his stuff shipped. But Turney said he realized the man’s mind was made up and there was no stopping him, so he started coming by after work and packing up the trailer for Benson. Then he told the elderly man that he was going to drive him the 2,200-miles himself.

Turney used vacation time to make the long trip and during the four-day journey, he learned all about Benson’s life, his service in the Navy during World War II, and his anxiety about moving into assisted living. They made it and became friends and Benson says, “I can’t thank that gentleman enough.”
