Professor Says SpongeBob Was A Violent Racist

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon and it doesn't always have any other meaning except to entertain. However, a University of Washington Professor believes that SpongeBob is not who we think he is.

Holly M. Barker recently wrote an article called, "Unsettling: SpongeBob and the Legacies of Violence in Bikini Bottom," in which she offers a different take on the crazy sea sponge.

She claims that SpongeBob's colonization of Bikini Bottom is "violent" and "racist," and also says that the cartoon is guilty of the "whitewashing of violent American military activities" against natives of the Pacific.

She believes the show is set in a version of the real-life Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, which were taken over by the United States during the cold war and used to test nuclear weapons. The native people of the islands were forced to leave the island.

The professor goes on to say that children who watch SpongeBob are being conditioned to accept that it's okay to reside on "another people’s homeland."
