The Pirates introduced Derek Shelton as the team's 40th manager.
He was the Twins' bench coach last season. Shelton said he wants players to realize just because they've reached the majors they have not arrived, but have to continue to improve.
Shelton has been a hitting coordinator for the Indians and also coached with Tampa Bay and Toronto.
He will join general manager Ben Cherington at the winter meetings, which begin this weekend in San Diego.
