Locals Raise Money To Save Town’s Only Grocery Store

The only grocery store in a small Central Iowa town has closed, but residents are pitching in to save it.

The Heartland Market in Jewell has closed its doors, so the town’s 1,200 residents now have to drive 10 miles to get fresh fruits and vegetables.

But locals aren’t giving up. They’re forming the Jewell Market LLC and have sold 130 shares to raise $220,000 to reopen the supermarket.

And it’s not the first time they’ve joined forces to save a store. They did the same thing back in 2001 when their hardware store closed and today, it’s thriving.
