In California, a young pit bull's life was saved by police officers using the narcotic overdose remedy drug, Narcan, after suspecting it was overdosing on fentanyl. The dramatic moment happened outside a Walmart when officers from the Irvine Police Department (IPD) had a run-in with the dog's owners.
After finding fentanyl in the couple's vehicle and placing them under arrest, the woman noticed her dog wasn’t well, saying, "Oh, I think my dog is overdosing." IPD spokesperson Kyle Oldoerp says the woman knew the dog was overdosing because it wasn’t the first time it had happened. Police aren’t sure how the dog came into contact with the drug, but IPD Sergeant Karie Davies recognized the symptoms. "Her tongue was hanging out of her mouth. Her eyes were kind of closing,” Davies says, “So the officers thought, hey, let's use the Narcan on the dog to see if that will help her out."
Fortunately, after receiving the Narcan, the puppy's condition quickly improved. The dog was taken to a nearby vet and is expected to recover fully. Authorities plan to keep the pup until a hearing determines if the owners will get her back.
