Connor Morris was cruising on his moped in Provo, Utah, when he noticed a school bus that seemed to be driving erratically, so he sped up to catch up with it. “I hit the throttle on the moped and went up on the curb," he explains. Inside the bus, Terry Byrnes was having a medical episode and was slumped over the wheel, unresponsive.
Kamrynn McCurdy, Byrnes’ granddaughter and bus aide, was also on the bus and when she couldn’t get him to respond, she took the wheel and steered the bus toward the side of the road. Then she saw Morris hop off his moped and rush toward them. "I opened the door for him, and he came to help my grandpa," McCurdy recalls. Together they managed to bring the bus to a stop.
In honor of their courage, the Provo Police Department awarded Morris and McCurdy a Citizen Recognition Award, for their role in not just saving Byrnes, but also preventing additional damage. They both humbly accepted the honor, with Morris saying, “It just needed to be done.”
