#GoodNews: Former Player Donates Kidney To Softball Coach

When Columbus, Georgia, softball coach Charles Parker was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney cancer more than a decade ago, he didn’t tell anyone about his illness. “I continued to keep coaching,” Parker says, “I kind of kept it a secret from everybody.” But then last year, his doctors told him that he would need a kidney transplant to survive.

Word got out this time about Parker’s failing health, and one of his former players stepped forward to donate a life-saving kidney. Lucy Wynne hadn’t spoken to her old coach in years, but she quietly got tested to see if she was a match and surprised him with the good news last Christmas. Then a few months later, the pair underwent successful transplant surgery.

Over the weekend, Parker and Wynne hit the field during The Georgia Independent Athletic Association Finals at South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus. Parker threw out the first pitch and his former player was behind home plate. Then the coach got a chance to publicly thank Wynne for saving his life, saying, “It’s just a blessing to have someone like Lucy to step up and do that for me.”
