Dallas, Texas, school bus driver Raquel Radford Baker is being hailed a hero after saving a seven-year-old student from choking. Preston, a student at Seagoville North Elementary School was riding the bus recently and joking with his friends when he put a quarter in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it.
The seven-year-old ran up to the front of the bus and Baker, thinking the boy was going to throw up, opened the door to let Preston out. But then the bus driver realized the boy was choking, so she followed him off the bus and performed the Heimlich maneuver on him several times before the coin became dislodged.
Days after the incident, Preston and his mom met up with Baker to thank her for her life saving actions. With tears in her eyes, the mother thanked her for saving her son. In addition to promising to keep coins out of his mouth, Preston had lots of positive things to say about his bus driver. “She’s my hero,” he says, “She saved my life … She’s an angel.”
