When Tobi Okunseinde of Haworth, New Jersey, wasn’t even a year old, he was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, a painful, life-shortening blood disease. At that time, the condition was believed to be incurable, but then his family learned that a bone marrow transplant from an optimal donor could successfully cure the disease in about 90% of patients.
Tobi underwent the grueling transplant process, which involved pre-treatment with chemotherapy before receiving a bone marrow donation from his one-year-old little brother Kwasi. A little more than a year after getting the life-altering donation, Tobi was recently declared free from sickle cell anemia
The boys’ father, Fotu Okunseinde, is grateful to have two healthy sons now and acknowledges Kwasi’s role in saving his brother's life. Now five-and-a-half years old, Tobi is aware that his little brother is responsible for his turn of fate and is calling Kwasi his savior.
